27 March 2019
MAYPORT, Fla. -- U.S. 4th Fleet (C4F) hosted U.S. 2nd Fleet (C2F), at its Headquarters, March 27, to discuss best business practices, to include staff organization and maritime operations, as U.S. 2nd Fleet continues to grow as the Navy’s newest fully operational numbered fleet.
"2nd Fleet visit was a great opportunity to create a better understanding and ensure synergy between our staffs,” said Capt. Dan Gillen, maritime operations center director, U.S. 4th Fleet. “2nd and 4th Fleet will work seamlessly in the Great Power Competition."
Vice Adm. Andrew Lewis was named C2F commander on August 24, 2018 during a ceremony on aboard aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), a few short months after the re-establishment was announced on May 4, 2018 by Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. John Richardson.
“We will be an advocate for the other operational fleets other maneuver arms, as our Sailors and Marines prepare to deploy around the world,” said Lewis. “To do this we are implementing a robust training plan to ensure our team is prepared, and consulting with our partner fleets as we build the new 2nd Fleet.”
The new U.S. 2nd Fleet is shaping into a lean and expeditionary staff that will exercise operational and administrative authorities over assigned ships, aircraft and landing forces on the East Coast and the North Atlantic, essential in the era of the return of great power competition.
Lewis stated, “In a changing strategic environment and return to Great Power Competition it is within all of our interests to get this phase of development right. It is imperative for us to define our networks, our relationships and our warfighting narrative in order to create and sustain a fleet that is fit for its time, and for its purpose.”
