A native of Kitchener Ontario, Rear Adm. (O-8) David Mazur enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces in December 1988. He is a 2008 graduate of the Royal Roads University where he holds a Bachelor’s Degree. He is a graduate of the Australian Command and Staff College, where he also completed a Master of Maritime Studies from the University of Wollongong. In June 2021 Rear Adm. Mazur graduated the year-long National Security Programme designed to prepare selected military, public service, international and private-sector leaders for future leadership responsibilities.
Following basic training, Rear Adm. Mazur went on to specialize in Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), in HMC Ships SKEENA and GATINEAU. Other operational sea tours include serving as the Operations Officer in HMCS REGINA, which included a deployment to the Middle East. Rear Adm. Mazur served as the Executive Officer in HMCS VANCOUVER in 2006, which he would later return to assume Command of in 2012.
Shore tours include Senior Staff Officer Maritime in the Canadian Special Forces Command (CANSOFCOM) Headquarters, Commander of Sea Training Pacific, N3/J3 in MARPAC/JTF(P), and Director Strategic Plans within the Strategic Joint Staff. Rear Adm. Mazur has commanded Canada’s largest base, Naval Base Halifax, and upon promotion to Commodore in 2021, assumed Command of Canada’s Pacific Fleet until he was relieved July 2025.
Rear Adm. Mazur was promoted in summer 2025, when he assumed his current duties as Vice-Commander, U.S. 2nd Fleet.
