Rear Adm. Tom Moninger

Rear Adm. Tom Moninger is from Williamsburg, Virginia and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1994. A Surface Warfare Officer, he served tours in USS Mitscher (DDG 57), USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), USS Thorn (DD 988), USS George Washington (CVN 73), and USS Princeton (CG 59). He commanded the destroyers USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) and USS Mahan (DDG 72), served as the Reactor Officer on USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), and commanded Destroyer Squadron Twenty Two.
Ashore, he worked in staff assignments at Naval Air Forces Atlantic, the J5/Iraq Division of the Joint Staff, Naval Surface Forces Atlantic, US Fleet Forces Command and US Southern Command. He earned advanced degrees in National Security Studies from the University of Maryland and the Naval War College.
As a Flag Officer, he led the Plans, Policy, and Integration Directorate of the Navy Staff prior to assuming Command of Carrier, Strike Group Twelve in May 2024.
Rear Adm. Moninger’ s personal decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (two awards), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), the Navy Commendation (five awards), and the Navy Achievement Medal (two awards) in addition to various unit citations and campaign awards.
