Commander Jamie Joe Diaz is a native of Texas and enlisted in the Navy in 1996. He was commissioned via the Iowa State University Navy ROTC program in 2003 with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Marketing. Additionally, he holds a Master’s of Arts Degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College.

Afloat, from May 2003 to October 2005 he served as First Division Officer and Repair Division Officer aboard USS Ogden (LPD 5). On board USS Ogden he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and earned his Surface Warfare Officer designation.  From October 2005 to June 2007 he served as Operations Officer assigned to MHC Crew Inflict and MHC Crew Excel and served aboard USS Oriel (MHC 55), USS Black Hawk (MHC 58), and USS Pelican (MHC 53). Aboard he earned his Engineering Officer of the Watch and Tactical Action Officer qualifications. From May 2011 to August 2015 he was assigned to LCS Crew 103 as Combat Systems Officer and Operations Officer. During his time as part of LCS Crew 103 he pre-commissioned the USS Fort Worth (LCS 3) and was part of her maiden U.S. 7th Fleet deployment in 2015. Additionally, he was selected to fill a gap onboard USS Freedom (LCS 1) and also deployed on her maiden deployment to U.S. 7th Fleet in 2014 as the Combat Systems Officer. From August 2019 to February 2022 he served as Executive Officer aboard USS Indianapolis (LCS 17) Gold.  From February 2022 to June 2023 he served as Commanding Officer aboard USS Indianapolis (LCS 17) Gold.

Ashore, from July 2007 to July 2009 he served as Force Navigator onboard Commander Naval Surface Forces. He also volunteered for an IA to Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa. During his IA he was the USA Civil Affairs OIC for Djibouti, Djibouti and forward deployed as the USA Civil Affairs OIC for Dira Dawa, Ethiopia. He is a 2008 graduate of the USA Civil Affairs Course. From August 2015 to August 2018 he served as Lead Project Officer onboard Commander Naval Surface Force Atlantic with N44 Readiness Assessments department. He also volunteered for an IA to Commander, U.S. 5th Fleet as Commander Task Force 51/5 Battle Watch Captain in support of Operation Restore Hope.  From August 2018 to July 2019 he served as Executive Officer onboard Afloat Training Group Norfolk.

His decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (4), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (5), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3), and numerous unit and campaign awards.
