A native of Dallas, TX and a graduate of the University of Houston, Lieutenant Commander Nowell commissioned through the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps program in 2006.  He holds a Master of Science in Management degree in Manpower Systems Analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA and is a qualified Warfare Tactics Instructor in Amphibious Warfare. In his most recent assignment, he served as Executive Officer, USS OAK HILL (LSD 51).

His sea duty assignments include as OI Division Officer and Damage Control Assistant in USS GRIDLEY (DDG 101), Operations Officer in USS GERMANTOWN (LSD 42) and USS SAN ANTONIO (LPD 17), Flag Materiel and Logistics Branch Head in Commander, Carrier Strike Group TWELVE.  He has deployed seven times in support of Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, Odyssey Lightning and Copper Dune, the Global War on Terrorism and other national tasking.

Ashore, he served as Operations Officer at Navy Operational Support Center, Fort Worth, TX; and as the Doctrine and Tactics Branch Head (N5) in Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Command, Amphibious Warfare Division.                 

His personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), as well as various campaign and unit decorations.
