Commander John Hoy is a native of Pittsburgh, PA, and a 2001 graduate of Georgetown University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service (International Politics). He earned a Master of Arts in 2002 at Georgetown in Economic Development and Security, and is a graduate of Naval Nuclear Power School and Prototype. Commander Hoy received his commission in 2002 through the George Washington University Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps.
Commander Hoy currently serves as the Commanding Officer of Assault Craft Unit TWO. His first sea duty was onboard USS LASALLE (AGF 3) from 2003 - 2004, where he served as Propulsion Division Officer and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He completed Nuclear Power School and Prototype in 2005 and reported to USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71) as the Machinery Division Officer from 2006 - 2008. While there he qualified Nuclear Engineering Officer. His next sea tour was onboard USS BOONE (FFG 28) as Combat Systems Officer from 2010 - 2012, followed by a tour as the Chemical and Radiological Controls Assistant onboard USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) in Yokosuka, Japan from 2012 - 2014. He served as the Executive Officer of USS MANCHESTER (LCS 14) from 2018 - 2020 and the Executive Officer at Assault Craft Unit TWO from 2021 - 2022.
Ashore, Commander Hoy served as the Deputy Officer in Charge of the AIRPAC Nuclear Power Mobile Training Team. Previously he served in the Expeditionary Warfare Directorate (N95) on the Chief of Naval Operations Staff (OPNAV) as a Requirements Officer. Prior to that, he served as the C5F/COMUSNAVCENT Fires officer, a position in which he coordinated and conducted strikes in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. Additionally he served as a Senior Instructor at the US Naval Academy Political Science Department.
Commander Hoy’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal (sixth award) and Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal (second award) and various unit and campaign medals.
