Cmdr. Matthew E. Plant is a native of Fredericksburg, Virginia. He is a 2006 graduate of the Virginia Military Institute with a bachelor’s degree in biology and a 2018 graduate of Colorado State University with a master’s degree in healthcare administration and management. He commissioned through Naval ROTC.
Plant’s operational assignments include serving as the first lieutenant and combat information center officer aboard the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Monterey (CG 61); weapons officer at Patrol Coastal Crew GOLF; weapons officer and combat systems officer aboard the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Mahan (DDG 72); and surface operations and strike officer at CSG Ten.
Plant’s shore assignments include serving as a seamanship and navigation officer at the United States Naval Academy and as an anti-submarine and surface warfare tactics instructor at Tactical Training Group, Atlantic.
He served as a battalion electronic warfare officer in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom while attached to Joint Crew Composite Squadron One as an individual augmentee.
He is qualified as a U.S. Navy surface warfare officer and his personal decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), Army Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal (two awards), and various unit and service awards.
